A quaint Italian town off the beaten path.

La Paz, Bolivia’s seat of government, is one of the world’s highest capital cities, dramatically set in a deep canyon carved by the Choqueyapu River. Founded in 1548 atop an important Indigenous settlement, the city has long been a crossroads of Andean cultures, colonial history, and modern political life.

Brasília may be a World Heritage Site, but it is only of interest to town planning and architecture students, and those keen to witness the folly of man on a metropolitan scale. It must have looked good on paper, and still looks good in photos, but in the flesh, forget it. Designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, urban planner Lucio Costa, and landscape architect Burle Marx, the city was built in an incredible three years between 1957 and 1960.

Boothbay Harbor is a small fishing village located close to the ocean. To experience the classic flavor of Maine, the outlying areas are a must-see.

Cameroon is often called “Africa in miniature” for good reason. Within its borders, travelers can explore coastal beaches, dense rainforests, vast savannas, active volcanoes, and snow-capped peaks, all without crossing a border.
